An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a web page that, when opened, would call the errant function and supply the name of an existing file or folder as the argument. The attempt to upload the file or folder would fail, but the file nevertheless would be deleted. The page could be hosted on a web site in order to attack users visiting the site, or could be sent as an HTML mail in order to attack the recipient when it was opened.

An attacker who is able to authenticate to a SQL server could delete, insert or update all the web tasks created by other users. In addition, the attacker could run already created web tasks in the context of the creator of the web task. This typically runs in the context of the SQL Server Agent service account.

It is possible to maliciously use field codes and external updates to secretly steal information from a user. Certain events can trigger the external update and the field code to be updated: for example, when the user saves a document or manually updates the links. Typically, the user is aware of these updates when they occur. However, a specially crafted field code or external update can be used to trigger an update without any indication to the user. This can permit an attacker to create a document that, when opened, updates itself to include the contents of a file from the user's local computer.

An unchecked buffer exists in the program that handles the decompressing of files from a zipped file. When this program tries to open a file that has a specially malformed file name that is contained in a zipped file, Windows Explorer may fail or an attacker may be able to run any code. This behavior creates a security vulnerability. Affects Microsoft Windows 98/ME/XP.

A malicious Win-XP Help Center request can easily and silently delete the contents of any directory on your Windows machine, we've learned. Worse, MS has rolled the fix silently into SP1 without making a public announcement. A good sketch of the problem in English, along with a harmless self-test, can be found here, thanks to Mike at http://unity.skankhouse.org, who did some tinkering after noticing a tip on a BBS.
