04.15.2010 - On the Road to Cloud Computing Interoperability

On the Road to Cloud Computing Interoperability

B-winstonbumpusPosted by Winston Bumpus
Director of Standards Architecture, VMware

In a recent interview Vint Cerf, often referred to as “the father of the internet” was quoted as saying, "We don’t have any inter-cloud standards. The current cloud situation is similar to the lack of communication and familiarity among computer networks in 1973." We at VMware agree that inter-cloud standards are critical to achieve the next level of interoperability and provide choices to our customers. We have been working over the past year with other companies in the industry to create and expand these important standards to fill this void.

About a year ago I began posting about VMware’s activities working with a number of technology companies to launch the Open Cloud Standards Incubator which was formed as a committee within the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF). The work of the Open Cloud Standards Incubator was to focus on ways to facilitate operations between private clouds within enterprises and other private, public, or hybrid clouds by improving the interoperability between platforms through open cloud resource management standards. The group also aimed to develop specifications to enable cloud service portability and provide management consistency across cloud and enterprise platforms.

Almost a year later cloud computing has become more mainstream with new products and companies emerging almost daily. Many companies joined in the important work within the DMTF and have made resource and technical contributions to its work.  These contributions include not only VMware’s vCloud API specification, but submissions by other organizations including HP, Fujitsu and Telef√≥nica. The group also released an Interoperable Clouds Whitepaper laying out the existing challenges and needed inter-cloud standards. The group’s public charter calls for it to complete its initial work soon which will begin the next phase of work to extend existing specifications and to develop new specifications where needed.

One of the standards that have emerged as a key technology for Cloud Computing Interoperability is the DMTF’s Open Virtualization Format (OVF).   What started out as a way to package virtual appliances has become an interoperable way to define and export workloads between clouds, which are either public or private clouds. OVF has emerged as a common packaging format and is supported by most of the open cloud APIs that exist today including VMware’s vCloud API.

Another important development this year is the launch of new standards activities in existing and emerging standards organizations. One of the key organizations that VMware joined is the Cloud Security Alliance. This organization is focused on defining best practices as it relates to the implementation of existing security standards and technologies to the cloud computing paradigm.  Other organizations have launched work and have developed specifications and programs for standardization including the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) work in cloud storage standards. In fact the industry has created a portal to track all of the work going on in cloud standards along with cloud standards related events.

We will continue to lead and participate in these important industry standards activities. We believe working with our partners and the rest of the industry to develop common interoperable standards is essential to enable customer choice and for the industry to achieve the full potential of cloud computing.

04.14.2010 - World record TPC-H performance on VMware vSphere 4

View VMware related news.
World record TPC-H performance on VMware vSphere 4

In what has become a regular phenomenon, VMware’s vSphere 4 has again proved that it can deliver the highest levels of performance for the most demanding applications. In a recent benchmarking effort by ParAccel, Inc., provider of ParAccel Analytic Database (PADB), vSphere 4 delivered the industry’s first fully-audited TPC-H benchmark result in an x86 based virtual environment. A cluster of 80 virtual machines running PADB, spread across 40 physical hosts, broke the existing world records for performance[1] and price/performance[2].

Some of the key highlights of this record performance are:

  • Ran 1,316,882 Composite Queries per Hour (QphH) @ 1,000GB, 13% higher than the next best performance.
  • Used 40 HP servers, 37% fewer than that used for the second best performance result.
  • Achieved a price/performance of US $0.70 per QphH, 7.7 times better than that of the previous performance record holder.
  • Took 16 minutes and 23 seconds to load 1 TB database at a rate of 3.7 TBs per hour, a load time 8.7 times  faster than that of the previous performance record holder.

This remarkable feat shows that vSphere enables efficient utilization of hardware resources through consolidation and achieves this without compromising on performance. Organizations can confidently virtualize the world’s most demanding applications and still realize significant cost and energy savings.

The setup used for this record feat was,

Servers:
40 x HP DL 380 G6 Server, each with

  • 2 Intel Xeon x5560, 2.8GHz processors ( 4 cores per socket)
  •  72 GB Memory
  • 8 x 300 GB (10K RPM) internal SAS Disks
  • 2 x HP PCIe Dual Port Gigabit network adapters

Hypervisor:
VMware, ESXi 4.0 update 1

Virtual Machines:
Leader Node:

1 virtual machine with

  • 4 vCPU
  • 32 GB memory
  • 4 x 279 GB virtual disk
  • 5 x virtual NICs
  • ParAccel Standard Linux, 64-bit
  • ParAccel Analytics Database, ver 2.5

Compute Node:
79 virtual machines with

  •  4 vCPU
  •  32 GB memory
  •  4 x 279 GB virtual disk
  •  4 x virtual NICs
  • ParAccel Standard Linux, 64-bit
  • ParAccel Analytics Database, ver 2.5

04.14.2010 - SpyBot Detection Updates: 2010-04-14

View SpyBot related news. Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you have not intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you do not see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there is no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

VMware vExpert 2010 applications now open

We’re pleased to announce that applications for the vExpert 2010 program are now open. To find out more about the program, and to apply or nominate someone, go to the new vExpert 2010 site. The deadline for application is April 30 at midnight Pacific time.

[There seem to be some temporary caching issues; If you don’t see the new vExpert site with the new logo, check back in a bit.]

The vExpert designation is based on your activities in 2009, and lasts for one year.  vExperts from 2009 should reapply for the 2010 program. I encourage everyone interested in participating to fill out the application form, since we don’t otherwise have a comprehensive record of all your virtualization evangelism activities in 2009. Of course, if you’d like to nominate someone else, feel free. (Multiple nominations don’t count extra, so ’get out the vote’ campaigns are not necessary.)

The vExpert program is a way for VMware to acknowledge and help those who ’go the extra mile’ and give back to the VMware user community by sharing their expertise and time. vExperts are bloggers, book authors, VMUG leaders, event organizers, speakers, tool builders, forum leaders, and others who share their virtualization expertise.

The first year of our program was 2009, and we designated almost 300 people as vExperts. Among the various activities the vExperts participated in this year were:

  • nomination for private beta programs
  • pre-release product briefings
  • access to conference content vmworld.com
  • featured at a vExpert demo pod at the VMworld Communities Lounge
  • VMworld meeting with Steve Herrod
  • featured at the Online Virtualization Forum

vExperts also had access to a private community that let them network, share knowledge, and get to know each other.

We had a great first year to kick this new program off. This year, we have more resources and some amazing plans for 2010. Thanks to everyone who participated in the vExpert 2009 program, and I’m looking forward to working with all of you more closely, and to your continued success. If you have any questions about the process or the program, you can leave a comment here or email us at vexpert@vmware.com.

Apply at the vExpert site. [There seem to be some temporary caching issues; If you don’t see the new vExpert site with the new logo, check back in a bit.]
